Free Lecture Series Offers Valuable Insight from Medical Professionals

“Dinner with the Doctor” events provide attendees with rare access

Goshen, N.Y. (Sept. 3, 2013) – Did you ever go for a doctor’s visit only to realize on the way home that you have more questions than when you walked in? Maybe it was an unexpected or new diagnosis. Or, maybe it was an adjustment to a prescription. Perhaps your time with the doctor ran short. Or, possibly you thought of more questions once you left the office.

Many times, patients or their families won’t follow up with the doctor. Because of this, Glen Arden, Elant’s Continuing Care Retirement Community, developed a unique solution.

Appropriately titled, “Dinner with the Doctor,” Glen Arden has begun hosting a series of free informal lectures and dinners open to the public and to Glen Arden residents. The guest doctor speaks on a specific topic and answers questions from attendees throughout each hour-long session. The inaugural lecture was held on June 24 and featured Dr. Karen Karsif, a surgeon and medical director of The Center for Breast Health at Good Samaritan. The next two lectures in the series are planned for Sept. 16 and Oct. 21 in Glen Arden’s Rhinebeck Room.

“People rarely have an opportunity to have a meaningful conversation with a doctor,” said Maureen Torelli, Vice President and Executive Director of Glen Arden. “These lectures provide opportunities for people to hear from a medical professional on a specific topic and get answers to their questions, gaining the valuable information that they need.”

On Sept. 16, Dr. Nicholas Batson and Dr. Lisa Batson, husband and wife doctors from Crystal Run Healthcare in Middletown, will speak on “Depression and Anxiety Across All Ages.” The Batsons will discuss how depression and anxiety present themselves in people of various ages and health conditions, as well as different disorders that cause depression and anxiety. Symptoms such as unexplained weight loss or weight gain; insomnia; fatigue; feelings of worthlessness and excessive guilt; inability to think, concentrate or make decisions, and recurring thoughts of death will be among the topics.

Dr. Nicholas Batson earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Louisville and earned his medical degree from American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine, Cupecoy, St. Maarten. He completed his residency in psychiatry at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem, N.C., and completed his fellowship in child and adolescent psychiatry at the University of Louisville. He is board certified in adult psychiatry.

Dr. Lisa Batson earned her bachelor’s degree from Quinnipiac University School of Health Sciences in Hamden, Conn., and earned her medical degree from American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine, Cupecoy, St. Maarten. She completed her residency in psychiatry at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem, N.C., and completed her fellowship in child and adolescent psychiatry at the University of Louisville. She is also board certified in adult psychiatry.

The following month on Oct. 21, Dr. Amala P. Chirumamilla, a cardiologist with Metropolitan Cardiology Consultants and the Bon Secours Medical Group, will focus her discussion on cholesterol’s impact on an individual’s health. Dr. Chirumamilla is board certified in internal medicine, cardiology, echocardiography, nuclear cardiology, computed tomography angiography, and vascular medicine. She received her internal medicine training at the University of Buffalo, her research fellowship training at Columbia University and cardiology fellowship training at Montefiore Medical Center, Albert Einstein College of Medicine.

“Glen Arden is committed to keeping our residents, their families and community members informed about important health issues,” said Torelli. “This series gives those in attendance valuable access to the knowledge and professional insights of leading members of the medical community.”

The series also gives Glen Arden the opportunity to work with other organizations in the Hudson Valley such as, Crystal Run Healthcare, Bon Secours Health System and other local health providers and hospitals.

“No health care organization can operate in a vacuum in this environment,” said Torelli. “Partnering enables us to bring information to our residents, to the family members of our residents and to the greater community. We see it as a public service to provide speakers on health issues and topics of interest to the community.”

The events are free, however reservations are required. For more information regarding the “Dinner with the Doctor” lecture series or to reserve your seat at one of the upcoming events, contact Maureen Torelli at 845-360-1424 or e-mail mtorelli@elant.org

Celebrating the Contributions and Achievements of Older Americans

Elant marks Older Americans Month in May with a variety of activities and events

Mark LaBruna, activities director for Elant at Goshen, has made big plans for Mother’s Day. On Sunday, May 13, he has arranged for Hudson Valley cabaret performer Stephanie Romm to perform for residents and their family members. The event is intended to not only entertain the mothers in attendance, but also to celebrate Older Americans Month and to kick-start National Nursing Home Week, which runs through May 19.

Since 1963, communities across the country have come together to celebrate Older Americans Month – a proud tradition that shows our nation’s commitment to recognizing the contributions and achievements of older Americans. National Nursing Home Week (NNHW) spotlights nursing home residents and staff and encourages everyone to celebrate those that make a positive difference in their lives every day. All across Elant’s communities, activities directors have planned special events to mark these celebrations with the residents and their families.

Elant at Goshen will feature activities centered on entertainment, LaBruna said. Carol Beaugard and Blue Express will perform a mix of driving bluegrass, pleasing folk-grass and Americana music on May 15. The event has been funded by Elant’s Jeffrey A. Weiss Memorial Arts Series, a new program providing free art classes, exhibits and performances to both Elant residents and the public. Later in the week, on May 17, residents will unearth a time capsule buried in 1987 at the Pavilion Courtyard. The event promises to be a fun-filled afternoon and will include a disc jockey playing music from the 1980s.

While these are just a few of many events planned to celebrate Older Americans Month and NNHW, Elant provides a variety of activities for its residents year-round. “We are providing some extra special events in May to show our appreciation, because we know the residents really enjoy them,” LaBruna said. “Especially when the events involve entertainment and/or music, they have an exceptionally great time. At Elant, every day is resident-focused. We provide activities and things to do seven days a week and on holidays throughout the year.”

According to LaBruna, many of Elant’s most successful events have been musically themed.

“Music gives residents their freedom of expression,” LaBruna said. “Music touches everyone. Some will clap, some will tap their feet and some will dance if the music moves them to. It’s a very social feeling, and we love to watch our residents get so much joy out of our musically-themed events.”

Todd Whitney, Elant’s CEO, said that Older Americans Month and NNHW are a great complement to the organization’s overall mission and goals.

“We believe firmly in helping older adults remain active, engaged, healthy and fulfilled, so developing our own unique events and activities for Older Americans Month and National Nursing Home Week is a natural fit,” said Whitney. “Across our organization, we strive to show our seniors appreciation, care and compassion – each and every day.”

The Elant at Fishkill and Elant at Wappingers Falls facilities will focus on the national theme “Celebrating the Journey” for this year’s NNHW. Elant at Newburgh and Elant at Fishkill will write up the life stories of some of their oldest residents, honoring the contributions they have made, and will frame and hang the stories in each resident’s room.

“At its heart, these themes are about honoring the lives, accomplishments and milestones of our residents,” said Whitney. “Every one of our residents has a unique story to tell, and this year’s Older Americans Month and National Nursing Home Week are dedicated to commemorating each of them.”
