One of the region’s most unique events slated for Sept. 8 at the Blue Sky Polo Club
Goshen, N.Y. (July 25, 2013) – Elant is pleased to announce its 12th Annual Polo Picnic, which will take place on Sunday, Sept. 8 from 1 to 4:30 p.m. at the Blue Sky Polo Club in Middletown. The much-anticipated event will honor a key regional organization and an esteemed individual for leadership, commitment and dedication to those in Elant’s region and beyond.
Elant will honor the American Cancer Society with the Flame of Excellence Award, which is bestowed upon a person or organization that has inspired leadership and dedication to improving the lives of others. The American Cancer Society (ACS) is the largest voluntary health organization, and its efforts have contributed to a 20 percent decline in cancer death rates in the U.S. since 1991, and a 50 percent drop in smoking rates. ACS also partners with Elant, and is currently conducting its latest cancer prevention study (Cancer Prevention Study – 3 or CPS-3), which is a long-term study to better understand the lifestyle, behavioral, environmental and genetic factors that cause or prevent cancer and aims to ultimately eliminate cancer as a major health problem for this and future generations. Furthermore, ACS regularly holds fundraisers (in which Elant employees and residents regularly participate) to raise money for cancer research and awareness of the disease.
Flo Hannes, MS, OTR, FAOTA, will receive the Elant Signature Award, which is given to an individual who demonstrates a commitment to enhancing health care and housing for the elderly through philanthropy, vision and communication. Hannes, Chairperson of the Occupational Therapy Assistant Program at SUNY Orange, has committed her professional career to the enhancement of services for individuals with special physical, emotional, developmental and/or social needs. Additionally, she has been an active supporter of many community programs and agencies within Orange County, serving as a Board Member for Independent Living Center and the Mental Health Association. Her most recent Board positions include the New York State Board for Occupational Therapy and ZYLOFONE: A Performing Arts Center for Children and Adults with Disabilities. Hannes has also been instrumental in facilitating Elant’s strong working relationship with SUNY Orange, particularly in organizing the SUNY Orange Occupational Therapy Assistant Internship Program and student training with Elant.
“This year’s honorees have done so much for Elant and for the community at large,” said Melissa McCoy, Director of Corporate Initiatives for Elant. “We are pleased to have the opportunity to commend them for their years of service and dedication, and the Polo Picnic is the perfect occasion to demonstrate their positive impact on our organization and the region.”
The annual Polo Picnic is one of the region’s most unique events and is steeped in tradition, where attendees enjoy champagne, hors d’oeuvres, fine dining, an auction, polo match and a divot stomp, topping off the afternoon with a hat contest. More than 200 guests attend this semi-formal event each year to honor award recipients and enjoy a one-of-a-kind experience while benefitting Elant residents.
The events’ proceeds will go to the Elant Foundation, the not-for-profit fundraising arm of Elant, and will be directed toward the two-year fundraising campaign, “The New Elant Dining Experience,” which will revolutionize the residential dining experience at all Elant locations. Improvements include an array of menu selections for each course, personalized tableside service and a new, restaurant-style environment where residents can share the experience with family and friends.
This year’s sponsors to date include Med-World Pharmacy, an Omnicare Company; Blue Sky Polo Club; O’Connor Davies, LLP; Mobile Life Support Services, Inc.; Hudson Valley Investment Advisors and Fox Radio.
